Principal's Message

Welcome Back to the final quarter of the school year and from spring break! I hope this message finds all of our students and families well,
Third Quarter Report Cards were issued on Friday, March 27th. Please take a few minutes to review and reflect on the academic and behavioral areas of these progress reports and continue to communicate with your child(ren)'s teacher(s) and any member of the support and leadership team.
Parent-Teacher Communication- Here are some tips to maximize your conference.
-
Prepare questions. Conferences are short, so write down all the questions that you want to ask the teacher.
-
Don’t just discuss grades. Inquire about your child’s work ethic, relationships with other children, behavior in class and attitude towards learning.
-
Alert the teacher to what’s happening at home. Providing a heads-up about a situation will let the teacher understand why there’s been a change in attitude or performance. (For example, it may be helpful for the teacher to know if there is stress at home from schedule changes, a new baby, loss of a job, etc.)
-
Be prompt. Don’t lose a moment of your opportunity to discuss your child.
-
Maintain a positive and upbeat attitude. By acting cooperatively if something negative comes up, you and the teacher can resolve the situation.
Ready, Set, Go! - This Spring's Progress Monitoring 3 (PM 3) began on April 1st as Grades 4 and 5 participated in the administration of B.E.S.T. Writing (Florida's Benchmarks for Excellent Student Thinking). This assessment is 120-minutes; however, students were able to utilize one-half of the entire school day to complete.
During testing season, please encourage your child to do their best and ensure that they have a good night's sleep, a healthy breakfast and on time to school. Once the administration begins, children cannot be admitted into the classroom. Students are well-prepared and we are very proud of them.

Take a Child to Work Day is Thursday, April 23. This national campaign provides parents, guardians, and other adults with the opportunity to showcase their workplaces, explain their job responsibilities, introduce their co-workers, and discuss the various career opportunities available at their workplaces to students in grades 2 through 12. The Elementary and Secondary activity packets are available on the Junior Achievement (JA) website, https://tacw.ja.org/.
April is Autism Awareness Month - Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurological disorder which affects the way the brain develops and processes information. ASD is characterized by impaired social interactions, problems with verbal and nonverbal communication, and unusual, repetitive, or severely limited activities and interests. ASD is considered a “spectrum” disorder because it varies widely in its specific behaviors and severity from one person to another. At Banyan, we are encouraging all students and staff to wear blue every Thursday in the month of April.
